When I said that the secular liberal values of the US work, I mean that they work invaraibly when we apply them. Not when we do not apply them which has perhaps been the case for most of our history. Whether or not that is the case, I think that it we are extremely fortunate to live in a country that at least aspires to live by such lofty ideals and can apeal to them to effect. I was trying to contrast that to Iran, where one must apeal only to a book supposedly dictated to an unlettered merchant by an angel in 650 BCE for political capital.
